Why Family Sessions Are Different from Pet-Focused Sessions

Family sessions focus on connection between loved ones. Pets are always welcome to join—after all, they’re family—but the session is designed around your family dynamic first. Because families tend to move more predictably than pets, I’m able to deliver larger galleries without the extensive retouching or creative intervention that dog-focused sessions often require.

When a dog is included in a family session, the pacing and flow naturally shift. Additional time is spent managing movement, attention, and transitions to keep everyone relaxed and engaged, while still maintaining a candid, connection-driven experience.

Because family sessions are connection-focused, they are edited differently than pet-first sessions. Images are curated for storytelling rather than precision posing, and leashes or handling tools are not removed in post-processing. This approach allows me to deliver a fuller gallery while keeping the experience efficient and low-pressure.

Pet-focused sessions, on the other hand, are designed to highlight your dog’s personality, energy, and expression. These sessions require additional patience, flexibility, and detailed editing to create the images you’ve come to expect, which is why pet sessions follow a slightly different structure and investment.

When pets are included in a family session, a small session adjustment applies to account for the added time, planning, and care needed to keep the experience smooth for everyone. This structure allows family sessions to remain accessible and fairly priced for families without pets, while still giving pet-inclusive families the attention their session requires.

When to Include Pets in a Family Session

Pets are always welcome to join family sessions. For mini or seasonal sessions, one pet per session is recommended. For Classic or Signature sessions, multiple pets are easily accommodated with extra planning or time to ensure calm, expressive portraits.

If capturing your dog’s personality is a top priority — including leash-free images, focused attention, or behavior-based moments — a pet-first session may be the better fit.
